For today's OT prac, we visited a rehabilitation centre..in Geelong called the Mc Keller Community and Rehab centre..just bout 5-10 mins drive from Geelong city. Surprisingly the area looks huge, different sections of buildings..old and new. Could easily get lost, cause every section looks similar inside the building and its colour coded. So to identify where you want to go you just have to follow the colour..say blue for paliative care, green..another different section...orange...etc.. Ahh..lots of information pumped in today, there is so many sections in the building..besides paliative care there is impatient department, neurobehaviour department, gym...where physiotherapist work, there is hydrotherapy as well..i think its some sort of therapy that is dealing with movements as well..you will see 'mostly' oldies floating in the pool, in fact most of the patients are elderly people..and i can smell cholorine from far (can imagine how much chlorine is added into the pool water).
There were lots of lounges for the patients to socialise with other patients or relax rather than staying in the room the entire time. Oh and i also notice where ever you go in each section of the building, there will be a sink with few bottles of soaps and a sign telling you how to wash your hands properly. They sort of have this anti-bacteria liquid, where you just squeeze some on your palm and rub around your fingers..exactly like how you wash your hands. Hygiene is definitely a number 1 priority. There is an OT department as well, where patients undergo rehabilitation or they are being accessed say after an injury. we get to try all sorts of equipments,..wheelchair, clutches...etc. Even small gadgets that allows you to put on your shoes and many more.
We were passing by one section of the department, mostly rooms where patients are staying and i saw this old lady talking on the phone. Next minute she started yelling at everyone (us) ..
"Can you please be quiet!!!!!!!!"..HAHA. Our supervisor went to one corner and told us that, some patients who come here pretty often can get abit cranky and apparently that old lady is suffering from dementia as well.
Its quite a nice environment to work and there are other health care workers that OTs tend to work with like speech pathologist, physiotherapist, social workers, nurses, psychologist...so yeah wide range of people working in one department...surprisingly there is only one dietician and ..hm cant remember the other one..but imagine the amount of work load!
haha...alrites..off to cook dinner..laters...
